Buy Watch Guide

How to Buy a Watch

If you're a man who cares about style, you probably own (or want to own) a few watches: an everyday watch, a weekend watch, plus maybe the damn good lookin' watch and even a luxury watch that's bespoke unto itself. Scroll down for what you're looking for in all of the above, and more:

The Weekend Watch

Key words: durable, rugged, utilitarian.
Often worn with: jeans, loafers, sunglasses.
Budget: $500.

1. Stainless-steel Tour '09 watch ($425) by Festina. 2. Stainless-steel TX World Time Airport Lounge watch ($495) by TX Watch Company. 3. Stainless-steel Officer's watch ($425) by Victorinox Swiss Army. 4. Stainless-steel SL chronograph ($200) by Timex. 5. Resin Rescue watch ($99) by Casio G-Shock. 6. Stainless-steel Alarm chronograph ($395) by Seiko. 7. Stainless-steel PRS 330 watch ($395) by Tissot.

What You're Looking for:

QUARTZ MOVEMENTS: They're often less expensive than mechanical ones, and you'll get more for your money. If, however, you can find a mechanical movement in the price range, go for it.
SHOCK AND/OR WATER RESISTANCE: You plan on living a little with this thing, right? Ask if it offers some kind of shock resistance — if the salesman isn't sure, chances are it doesn't. Same goes for water: Double-check the watch's back or dial to ensure it's water-resistant to a certain depth. (It's often measured in meters, with 100 meters equaling roughly 330 feet.)

What You're Not:

ANYTHING GOLD: The most you'll get at these prices is gold plating, and since the thickness of plating is measured in microns, you're only a few dings away from the base metal. Opt instead for plastic, aluminum, or steel.

The Third Watch

Key words: distinctive, timeless, damn good lookin'.
Often worn with: anything from T-shirts to Tuxedos.
Budget: $5,000.

1. Steel Arceau Ebony chronograph ($4,325) by Hermès. 2. Steel Grand Carrera Calibre 6 RS watch ($3,500) by TAG Heuer. 3. Stainless-steel Aquatimer Automatic 2000 watch ($4,400) by IWC. 4. Steel Airwolf Raven watch ($4,080) by Breitling. 5. Stainless-steel Star 4810 automatic chronograph ($3,830) by Montblanc.

What You're Looking for:

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Maybe it's the pronounced pilot crown of this IWC watch or the sloping numerals on a Hermès dial: There should be one feature that sets it apart.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT: If you're looking for a watch that will last a lifetime, invest in the kind of craftsmanship that produces mechanical movements.

What You're Not:

ANYTHING TOO TRENDY: Trends like elaborate bezels and oversized dials (i.e., anything larger than 44 mm) come and go, but a midsized watch with a fairly basic design and color scheme never goes out of style.
